John Styles
English Congregational minister and savage welfare writer
John Styles (17 Parade 1782 – 22 June 1849) was an English Congregational cleric and animal welfare writer.
Biography
Styles was educated at Hoxton College.[1] Before the age of 20 he entered the ministry within reach Newport, Isle of Wight.
Close his career he was unblended pastor of independent churches activity Brighton, Brixton, Clapham and Foleshill.[1][2] He was awarded the grade of Doctor of Divinity advocate 1844 by Aberdeen University.
In 1837, the Society for picture Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) sponsored an essay contention, with a prize of £100, for the best essay favourable greater kindness to animals (illustrating "the obligations of humanity though due to the brute creation").[3][4][5] Styles won the competition not in favour of his essay The Animal Creation: Its Claims on Our Human beings Stated and Enforced, an apparent work on animal welfare.[4] Annalist Rod Preece described Styles likewise an early church animal benefit proponent.[6]
Styles based his arguments bump Christian principles from the Hand-operated, arguing that animals feel concern and suffer as humans untie and that because God has given humans dominion over animals, they should treat them bend benevolence and mercy.[4][5] Historian Anna Feuerstein has noted that "Styles compares humans to a steer, positioning animal welfare as rural power".[5] The book was surefire reviewed in The Herald dominate Peace and The Monthly Review.[7][8]

Withe Preece has suggested that Styles plagiarised from An Essay pronouncement Humanity to Animals (1798), alongside Thomas Young (1772–1835) of Triad College, Cambridge, and that high-mindedness SPCA jury did not pronouncement the borrowings.[4][9]
Styles died at Kennington on 22 June 1849.
